SCS provides a balanced education for kindergarteners.
The kindergarten curriculum begins with a quick review of the end of the four’s curriculum and progresses to short and long vowel rules, special sounds, and sight words giving our students the ability to decode and read 100’s of words. Then they begin ability leveled reading groups in the fall with a series of 12 basic readers that take them into spring. After that series is completed, a new series of readers are introduced taking the students to the end of their school year with most students reading on a first grade level. By this time, they are becoming more fluent and expressive, and their comprehension abilities soar. The love and adventure of reading begins!
By kindergarten, the children’s hand/eye coordination and pencil grip are vastly improved and ready to take on the challenges of writing. We provide ample opportunity to practice in our special writing tablet made just for their size. Before you know it, they will be writing sentences.
Our kindergarten students continue in all of the above skills and engage in more advanced math concepts: clocks, coins, addition, subtraction, counting and writing to 100 by 10’s, 5’s and 2’s, understanding the calendar—weeks, months, year, and much more. Math concepts are best learned and applied in a “hands on” approach, in which we incorporate a variety of tools to help them visualize the connections between the abstract and the concrete.
Children enjoy singing in their classroom, and also have a regular visit from our music teacher. The children develop musical skills by listening, clapping and marching to music, playing the rhythm instruments, practicing and participating in our Christmas and spring programs.
Participating in arts and crafts opens up a wide range of activities for our children to explore and create. They will experiment with the various media available crayons, markers, paint, clay, glue, brushes, sponges, scissors, papier-mâché, etc.
Our curriculum covers thematic studies throughout the year about weather, seasons, animals, planting, health, safety, community helpers, American holidays, international days, field trips, and many more topics relating to the world around them. Our kindergarten students observe the marvel of the solar system, and the mysteries of the underwater world.
Running, jumping, climbing, balancing and energetic movement is essential to the muscle development and fitness of our children. Kindergartners play every day on the outdoor playground or in our indoor play areas. They also have gym class once a week.
A well-rounded education for preschoolers and kindergartners includes social and personal character development, using Biblical principles. Our school parents often tell us that the character development is one of the things that attracted them to our school; because they are working to instill in their children’s lives at home the same principles that we try to instill in their hearts at school. The school becomes an extension of the home. We look to the future. They will not remain small children; they eventually will grow into elementary students, then teenagers, and then young adults. Now is the best time to teach biblical values, good manners, cooperative interaction and communication with others, study skills, and proper work ethics. Our administration, teachers and staff are committed and unified in this important mission.
